In preparation for a vacation to France, my wife and I purchased and labored through Pimsleur French 1, 2 & 3 (90 lessons in total). First of all, this is real work...it is not just listening to the CDs and magically you are fluent in French. But I will admit, after 90 lessons, we were able to converse moderately well in France. I will also say, that the French people genuinely appreciated our efforts to speak in their native tongue.The Pimsleur method does and excellent job of teaching pronunciation, grammar and sentence structure. After French 3, you still will not be able to 'hear' the language at the rapid pace of speech of the French, but you will be able to negotiate the language with waiters, airport personnel, train station personnel and taxi drivers.It took us at least twice and often as many as four times through each lesson to fully master the lesson.
Pimsleur really is great. It makes you actually learn. Great for in the car. Best of maybe three systems I tried. (I didn't try Rosetta Stone.)But what does Audible add to this edition? (1) Bizarre track breaks. Because they break randomly I basically repeat by whole CD, not by lesson. (2) Lower audio quality. I got French 1 via CDs and French 2 via Audible, and the difference was immediately obvious. Like a cheap, tinny MP3.Still works fine, actually, and maybe that's the motive to buy the pricier CDs. But come on-- degrading audio is the business you're in?
I have and am enjoying Pimsleur French 1 but I'm going to wait a bit to get French 2. The French 1 recording was updated in September 2018 so I'm wondering if French 2, which was released in 2010, will also get an update soon.
French phase 2 builds on phase on bringing you up to speed with more conversational French for the work place and travel. It teaches you how to get and receive directions, and do comparisons, ask for a doctor all the while reviewing what you have learned in French Phase 1.As I mentioned in my review of French Phase 1. Pimsleur is really the best way to learn a new foreign language. It's affordable, especially if you save up your credits to get them on Audible. It only takes you a half an hour a day, no flash cards, no memorization of conjugations, just starts you off in conversation and you learn the conjugations by use and repetition. People say that you can't learn a language once you are such and such an age, but it is B.S.! You don't need to be a kid to learn a language and retain it, you just need to learn the same way a kid learns and this is what Pimsleur does, it teaches you to learn a language the way a kid learns a language.
