This is one of those rare technical books which are well-written and serve as an in-depth bridge between theory and practice. It's very nice to have around if you've got an electrical engineering background and are getting back into audio circuit design. It reminds me of Walter Jung's book "Op Amp Applications Handbook," Analog Devices, 2005, although Self is a bit less gentle with the reader. I love the jabs regarding the "Audiophile" community (see also "Science and subjectivism" in chapter 1 of Self's "Audio Power Amplifier Design Handbook; really nice).
Upon a first go through, the material looks amazing and very thorough. Self details designs and explains in depth the operation and pitfalls of common electronic design methods. I will say that the intended audience is someone who has an electronics background (engineer or technician) and previous knowledge of op amps/transistor amplifier design. He does go through these designs in great detail but he doesn't always take baby steps; which I honestly prefer.However, I took a star off because there seems to be a typo on the front cover? It only says 'Small Signal' on the cover, but the spine of the book has the proper title and edition number. This honestly doesn't bother me much since the information inside is definitely from the 2nd edition, but for as much as this book costs, that seems unacceptable. This could just be an Amazon problem rather than the book itself or perhaps I just got a wrong one off. Either way I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere and know other people will care more than I do. Other than the build quality seems sturdy for a paperback textbook and I look forward to reading this cover to cover.

A clearly explained and illustrated text. With a couple exciting professional audio design projects in the works, I couldn't put the book down, it was so helpful. It’s earned a spot on my technical library along side other luminaries, e.g, Olson, Jung, Holman, Blauert, Toole, Rayleigh (Strutt), and 40yr of AES journals.
Like all of Douglas Self's books, a model of clarity. Good explanations, good pictures, good measurements and simulations that well illustrate the principles. In addition, his light tone and occasional bits of humor make reading it quite pleasant.
